…din fundul Brasovului, scuza-ma Lavinia…Si nu, nu ma simt onorata ca un X care se crede scriitor isi aduce traducator. E foarte bine, e frumos din partea lui, dar sa nu se mire ca noi pricepem ce zice el si fara translator…iar felul in care a spus-o clar denota ca ne considera idioti si nu se simte placut surprins de acest aspect. Nu e fudulie, crede-ma, am inteles perfect ce vrea Anca sa sublinieze

Ce atitudine privinciala! Turistii….sunt turisti, peste tot. Ei functioneaza dupa motto-ul ‘ muie-ti is posmecii’, pt. Ca in vacanta nu vor sa se streseze de nuciun fel. Sa o faci tu pentru ei si gratis daca se poate. De-asta sunt unele tari unde turistul revine la nesfarsit. Pt. Ca aia au inteles ce vrea un turist. In fine, cat despre Limba engleza …scriitorul a complimentat pe cei prezenti, insa voi in fudulia voastra ati luat-o ca o ofensa. Si asta pt.ca aveti mentalitate privinciala, chiar daca scrieti din fundul Bucurestiului. Eu m-as simti onorata ca un X-escu Isi aduce translator, asta denota respect fata de lb mea materna. Niciun francez/ neamt nu ar fi reactionat asa. va las pe voi sa pricepeti de ce

Cât despre Oana și Simona, sunt perfect de acord cu voi – și asta în primul rând pentru că eu în realitatea asta trăiesc, în lumea asta unde suntem maimuțele care uite, știu să zâmbească la poză și ne servesc pe noi, ăștia cu banii și civilizația, care vă facem țara un loc vizitat.
Deloc greșită și chestia asta, însă detaliile (care ne deranjează) fac diferența de ne lasă cu impresia asta despre toți cei care sunt uimiți că avem aeroport, învățământ obligatoriu, apă curentă (puțină), mai puține wc-uri în curte, parcă și ceva mai puține mame adolescente și tot așa. Vă pup cu drag!

Glad to see that our post managed to gather so many comments. However, the topic was focused on tourists and what they think of us, Romanians, and all the aspects in the article were centered on this specific idea. Mr Nicoll, you are just a victim of my perspective – and if this offended you in any way, we apologize. It is not our concern to imply that maybe, just maybe, you are not entitled to base your opinions on stereotypes – as it is highly impolite that I considered you, at that point especially, a nobody who writes some books and then just thinks they are somewhere higher than the rest of us. Because I could not possibly know that. Or anything else about you.
Concerning my Romanian fellows here in the comment section, I completely understand their point. We are so frustrated to see how incredibly smart we seem to be, and yet be always mistaken for ”gypsies” and thieves (or whatever bothers us as a description).
Again, Mr Nicoll, I used you as an example of a tourist who embraces stereotypes – perhaps a mistake. I have really strong feelings against tourists in general – perhaps a mistake too. My point is that we are not perfect and life’s short, and this is because whenever I manage to see all this fight from an objective perspective, we are both right. May we be filled with peace and our shelves filled with books! 🙂

Asta incercam si eu sa il fac sa inteleaga, Oana, dar se pare ca si-a facut o fixatie legata de noi si ramane ancorat in ceea ce crede el. Atat de tare ma enerveaza cei care ne pun eticheta imediat ce afla de nationalitatea noastra. Dar, ma rog, nu are rost sa bat apa in piua degeaba, se pare ca nu am cu cine…

Ce idiot. Parca nu stie ca engleza e limba de circulatie internationala si ca o invatam la scoala obligati.
Urasc oamenii care ne cred prosti. In caz ca nu stiau suntem singurul popor din lume care e mega-concentrat sa invete o limba properly, cu tot cu accentul nativ. Cand vrem sa facem ceva, o facem bine!
Unii dintre noi vorbesc si franceza. Sa inteleg ca suntem un popor de genii in ochii micilor americani si anglofoni?
Daca era dupa mine invatam rusa, turca si coreeana, dar nu e dupa mine!
Doar pentru ca multi dintre noi suntem saraci, nu inseamna ca suntem si prosti! Wtf?

No. You cannot assume anything you want. That’s the point. You can’t assume that I speak Romanian, just as I can’t assume that you speak English. It’s a ridiculous assumption and, certainly, it was not my experience. If everybody in Romania speaks English, why would the publishers bother sending my translator with me? Why would they bother translating the book into Romanian? The publishers – who are Romanian – obviously didn’t believe that everybody speaks English. Your argument is utterly undermined by that alone. It’s such a simple and obvious point that it is impossible to believe you don’t see it, unless you are arguing for the sake of arguing. You have clearly set out to find offence without reason and there is no point in discussing this any further but, I assure you, I will not allow this ridiculous incident to spoil my happy memories of your country and the many good people I met there.
